RAN Youth & Education meeting ‘(Post-)COVID narratives that polarise’

This is an online meeting that will take place on 24 and 25 September (1pm-4:30pm CET)

For the RAN Youth & Education Working Group meeting on ‘(Post-)COVID narratives that polarise’ we are currently looking for suitable participants. During the COVID-19 crisis, narratives arose blaming people from certain nationalities or religions for this crisis. In the streets, online, at youth centres and in classrooms these narratives divide the youth in society and can feed into the breeding ground of radicalisation.

The aim of this meeting is to equip youth workers and teachers with tools and methods to deal with polarising narratives among the children and teenagers they work with. During the meeting, teachers and youth workers discuss what they experience and the challenges they face in classrooms, youth centres and in the streets when it comes to this topic. Outcomes of this meeting will feed into a Post-COVID Q&A Handbook against polarisation.

Questions that will be leading in this meeting include: Which polarising narratives do teachers and youth workers encounter in their classroom and their work? How to respond as a teacher or youth worker to hateful statements or narratives in the classroom/among children and teenagers? How to educate children and teenagers about these sensitive themes? And how to deal with fake news or conspiracy theories that are related to COVID specifically?

Call for participants

We are currently looking for youth workers, teachers, principals, school counsellors and care teachers who have experienced or are experiencing polarised narratives in the streets, online, at youth centres or perhaps in (virtual) classrooms. If you experience challenges on how to deal with this, or if you are able to share good practices related to this phenomenon, please send in your motivation to attend this RAN meeting. In order to find the best suited participants, and a relevant mixture of participants, we would like to ask you to fill in our survey.

Deadline

If you are interested in participating at this meeting, please fill in our survey before 18 August.

We will invite participants based on this information. Please keep in mind that we will only invite 30 participants for this meeting to ensure valuable exchange and interaction, so participation is not guaranteed. (Please note that a webinar on the outcomes of this meeting will take place in December. The webinar allows more participants to take part).

If you have any questions, please contact Pomme Woltman (p.woltman@radaradvies.nl) and Annelies Jansen (a.jansen@radaradvies.nl).
