Tirana - The Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), Majlinda Bregu has been awarded for her inspiring leadership, unwavering commitment and contribution to regional cooperation and EU integration of the region, at a ceremony held in Tirana today. The President of the European University of Tirana, Selami Xhepa presented Ms Bregu with a Certificate of Appreciation celebrating her lifelong dedication to advancing European integration of the Western Balkans, promoting dialogue, sustainable development, enhancing economic and social ties, supporting gender equality, youth empowerment and fostering cooperation across the region.

“After these past six years, I can say that respect remains the cornerstone of regional cooperation - respect for others' opinions, perspectives, borders, and even history. Over these years, the Regional Cooperation Council, alongside the Western Balkans, has achieved significant milestones, delivering tangible benefits to its citizens. From roaming-free Western Balkans, reduced roaming charges between the EU and the region, to mutual recognition of diplomas and professional qualifications, and the development of Common Regional Market (CRM). Today, the CRM is a regionally-driven pathway integrated into the EU’s plan for the region. But, with nearly 30% of Western Balkan youth left unemployed and 1 in 3 considering leaving their economy, we’re at a critical juncture where prioritising youth-oriented policies is no longer an option, but a necessity. These policies must be designed to offer young people compelling reasons to stay, fostering opportunities for growth, innovation, and fulfilment within their home communities. By addressing their aspirations and concerns, we could not only slow the current pace of brain drain but also build a future where our youth sees their potential and ambitions realised right here, in our region,” said Bregu in her speech upon receiving the recognition.

“As a distinguished figure with a fresh perspective through her roles over the years Majlinda has left a lasting impact. It is a pleasure and a source of pride that Albania has given a significant figure to not only regional but undoubtedly European politics. We hope to see her career continue to grow in scope and impact in the years to come,” said Selami Xhepa, UET President, at the ceremony.

Majlinda Bregu is approaching the conclusion of her mandate as the Secretary General of the RCC, marking the end of an impactful and productive six-year tenure. During her leadership, the RCC has achieved significant milestones, fostered regional cooperation, drove forward key initiatives, and championed the shared aspirations of the Western Balkans.
