International Women’s Day: Stronger Women, Stronger and Safer Region

Sarajevo, 8 March 2025 – Today, as the world marks the International Women’s Day, the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) reaffirms its commitment to women’s empowerment across the Western Balkans. Women’s contributions to business, education, politics, and innovation are driving forces of our societies, yet challenges remain in achieving full gender equality.

A little over half of the population in our region are women, and nearly half of the employed workforce consists of women. Over the years, we have seen progress—improvements in labour force participation, policy reforms, and stronger advocacy efforts. However, the reality is that women still earn 16% less than men, only 1 in 7 top managers is a woman, and just 1 in 3 parliamentary seats is held by a woman. Progress is tangible, but so is the work ahead.

“Every day, women across the Western Balkans demonstrate remarkable resilience and leadership in various fields, yet structural barriers continue to limit their full participation. Bridging the gap is not just about fairness - it is about unlocking the full economic and social potential of our region,” said RCC Secretary General Amer Kapetanovic on this occasion.

The RCC has been at the forefront of regional efforts to advance women's economic empowerment. Six years ago, the RCC launched the Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship (WE) campaign, leading to the establishment of the Regional Network of Women in Entrepreneurship and the annual Western Balkans Women Entrepreneurs of the Year recognition. These initiatives, part of the Common Regional Market Action Plan, celebrate and support women entrepreneurs who drive change in their communities and industries.

On 13 March 2025 in Pristina, the RCC will unveil the Western Balkans Women Entrepreneurs of the Year 2024, continuing its tradition of highlighting exceptional women making an impact in the regional economy. Now in its fourth edition, this recognition serves as a powerful reminder that women empowerment is not just a one-day commitment—it is an everyday mission.

As we celebrate women’s achievements today, the RCC calls for continued collective efforts in fostering equal opportunities. Because stronger women mean stronger economies, stronger societies, and ultimately, a stronger and safer region.
