Essay and Photo Contest 2008

Results

The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) Secretariat invited citizens from Southeast Europe to take part in the RCC Essay and Photo Contest 2008, which was open for submission of the works from 10 September until 31 October 2008.

The theme of the contest was Regional Cooperation in Southeast Europe. The works should have reflected the RCC mission of promoting mutual cooperation and European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Southeast Europe in order to reinvigorate economic and social development in the region to the benefit of its people. The important contribution of Southeast Europe to the rest of Europe and the world should have been mirrored in the submissions.

The works were to reflect readiness and ability of the people of Southeast Europe to take responsibility for their future, and to create, through dialogue and cooperation, conditions for overall progress of the region and a climate of tolerance and encouragement.

Individuals as well as legal entities from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and UNMIK/Kosovo, regardless of age and profession, were eligible to take part in the contest.

The best works were selected by a panel of qualified professionals on the basis of creativity, originality, quality, and effectiveness in conveying the contest theme. The panel decided to award the works as follows:

Essay category

  • 1st place – Emre Kizilkaya, Turkey

Photo category

  • 1st place – Iris Trashani, Albania
  • 2nd place – Maja Zlatevska, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
  • 3rd place – Fatmir Trashani, Albania

In line with the contest rules, the works submitted become property of the RCC Secretariat, which may use it for display in the Secretariat’s premises, RCC website or reprint in publications with no additional cost to the RCC Secretariat. The essays and photos will not be used for sale. Appropriate citations and credit will be given to the authors.

The RCC Secretariat expresses gratitude to all the participants in the contest for submitting their works and hopes they will remain interested in the future activities of the organization.

The RCC Secretariat wishes to thank the Federal Republic of Germany for the financial support to the Essay and Photo Contest 2008.

Awarded Essay

The Story of an Unpublished News Piece, by Emre Kizilkaya

It all started in May 1999. I was a young, wanna-be journalist who ended up at the photo exhibition of Bikem Ekberzade, the only Turkish woman who is a war correspondent. Bikem, as a great guide, encouraged me to search  around for the stories myself. After I insisted that I wanted to go to a “real battleground,” she tried to put a bridle on this over-excited youth. “There are different forms of war,” she said. “No need to go to Kosovo or Belgrade for now. You can find on-going wars in Turkey, if you look good for them.”
